Welcome to EcoTab ("we," "our," or "us"). We are committed to protecting your privacy and ensuring
transparency regarding the data our browser extension collects. This Privacy Policy explains our
practices when you use the EcoTab browser extension.
Our Core Philosophy: EcoTab was built to save energy, not to spy on you. We process the
vast majority of your data locally on your device and only transmit anonymized, aggregated statistics
necessary for calculating environmental impact.
1. Information We Collect
To provide you with carbon-emission reduction metrics and memory-saving features, we collect the
following anonymous or randomized data:
- Anonymous Device Identifier (Extension ID): A randomly generated 36-character
string (UUID) assigned to your installation. This cannot be linked to your name, email, or Google
account.
- General Location Data: We may approximate your country and city based on your IP
address at the time of installation to understand our global ecological impact. We do not store or
track exact GPS coordinates or your permanent IP address.
- Browsing Statistics: We log the domain names (e.g., youtube.com) you visit, the
time spent, and estimating the carbon footprint. We do not collect the full URLs (e.g.,
youtube.com/watch?v=123) or the content of the pages you view.
- Aggregated Savings: We track total numbers such as "Tabs Hibernated," "Ads
Blocked," and "Megabytes of RAM Saved."
2. Information We DO NOT Collect
Your privacy is strictly respected. We never collect, access, or store:
- Personal Identifiable Information (PII) such as Names, Addresses, Phone Numbers, or Emails.
- Your Search Queries (Google, Bing, etc.).
- Passwords, Keystrokes, or Credit Card Information.
- Your browsing history outside of generating aggregated domain-level energy reports.
3. How We Use the Data
The anonymized data transmitted to our servers is exclusively used for the following purposes:
- To calculate your personal and our platform-wide total carbon (CO₂) savings.
- To display global aggregated statistics on the EcoTab platform.
- To improve the efficiency of our Deep Work and Tab Hibernation algorithms.
4. Sharing of Information
We do not sell, rent, or trade your data to any third party. The aggregated environmental statistics may
be shared publicly to demonstrate the positive ecological impact of our user base, but this data will
never identify individual users.
5. Data Storage and Security
The majority of your browsing operations are handled locally on your machine using your browser's secure
`chrome.storage.local` API. The minimal, anonymous payload we send to our servers is transmitted over
encrypted HTTPS connections and stored securely in our database.
6. Contact Us
If you have any questions or concerns about this Privacy Policy or our treatment of your data, please
contact the developer via the support portal on the Chrome Web Store or through the EcoTab extension
